Demo site with information about ePortfolio

Project Overview:

The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) and the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC) require graduate programs to conduct both formative and summative assessments, which are comprehensive evaluations of learning outcomes throughout a student's course of study and a culminating evaluation at the end of his/her program. The graduation portfolio has been an important formative and summative assessment tool in the Communicative Disorders (CD) Program at San Francisco State University (SFSU).

The department has created an ePortfolio reference site where students can find guidelines and samples for the different competency areas required in their own ePortfolios. ePortfolios are created using eFolio in partnership with Academic Technology at SF State.

A well-organized portfolio can help students document their professional development, showcase their use of best practices, and articulate their professional philosophy. A portfolio shows a sample of the breadth and depth of a person's work. It is a visual resource for the presentation of a professional self in an engaging and accessible way. It allows students to define and highlight their own learning outcomes in ways that are meaningful to them and that are consistent with learner-centered education.

Traditionally, the CD program graduation portfolios have been constructed in three-ring binders. Although many print-based materials could be displayed nicely in a paper-based format, it presented some distinct limitations. For example, it did not easily allow for the presentation of dynamic artifacts, such as video, audio, slides, or web links. It was difficult to share paper portfolios beyond a limited, local audience. Print-based portfolios also could not be easily updated and kept relevant after graduation.

In an effort to address the limitations identified above, the CD program is joining the ranks of other "early adopters" of electronic portfolios at SFSU. SFSU is a leader in the California State University (CSU) ePortfolio initiative and has been recognized as an ePortfolio Center of Excellence within the CSU system. We are excited to benefit from and to contribute to this initiative by welcoming our first cohort of graduate students who will be building and publishing ePortfolios to reflect upon and to present their academic and professional achievements.
